Product Profile & Mode of Action
Thidiazuron is a low-toxicity, highly efficient plant growth regulator formulated as a 50% wettable powder, specifically developed for cotton defoliation. Once applied, it triggers the natural formation of an abscission layer between the petiole and the stem, allowing green leaves – along with their petioles – to drop cleanly without contaminating the cotton fiber, while also promoting concentrated boll opening for improved harvest efficiency and lint cleanliness.
Application Technique & Dosage
Apply when approximately 70% of the bolls have cracked, about 20 days before the first frost, using foliar spray. The recommended dosage is 300–600 grams per hectare, diluted in 600 liters of water (equivalent to 40 liters per mu). Optimal results are achieved when the temperature exceeds 20°C; if rainfall occurs within two days after application, respraying is recommended. No additional ethephon is needed. For whole-plant defoliation, spray the entire canopy; to keep top leaves and young bolls, target only the middle and lower parts.
Performance Benefits & Field Value
Thidiazuron improves air circulation and light penetration within the crop canopy, accelerates ripening of flavonoid-rich cotton varieties, and reduces leaf trash, making it equally suitable for hand picking and mechanical harvesting. As a low-toxicity, environmentally sound defoliant, Thidiazuron 50% WP has proven its reliability and cost‑effectiveness in major cotton‑growing regions worldwide, becoming an indispensable tool in modern cotton management.
